The location of the pub was excellent, in the centre of the village and only a short walk to the Peak Cavern, the main reason for our visit. The ambience inside was lovely and the staff were excellent. They were all young, very efficient and friendly. Our afternoon meal was fantastic, well cooked and very tasty. The service was really good and, again, the young staff excelled themselves. Our room was large and well heated with a comfy four poster bed. However, the bathroom was very dated and needed a complete refurbish. There was a step in the middle of it going up to the sink area, which, both my husband and I thought was dangerous. It was exceedingly windy that day and one of the old sash windows rattled loudly. We did not mind this too much as we were only staying for 1 night and the window frames were part of the old framework of the building. My only real criticism was the fact that I thought I had ordered bed and BREAKFAST. There was no breakfast. We were told we would have to visit their sister pub about 2 miles away and would get a 20% discount off breakfast prices. I think this is unacceptable, especially as I had spoken to the landlord a few weeks before our visit. We would love to visit Castleton again but would choose another pub/hotel that offers breakfast as part of the price.
